âAre you okay?â
Ianâs next breath came out as a gasp, and he realized that heâd word-vomited his story the moment Ghost answered the phone, not even bothering with pleasantries or their usual banter.
âIan,â Ghost prompted.
Ian wiped a hand down his face and sat down heavily on the end of the bed. Bruce, John, and Alan were still next door, ensuring that the girlsâ belongings didnât contain any strange powders, blades, or other threats, and tidying up at Ravenâs direction. Ian had come into his and Alecâs room, Alec watching worriedly as he made the call. Their room looked untouched, nothing out of place, but Ian couldnât imagine pulling back the covers and sleeping here, now.
âAre you okay?â Ghost repeated. The genuine worry in his voice was what finally dragged Ian a few steps back from panic.
He took another breath, swallowed, and said, âPhysically, yes. We werenât harmed. And we â I,â he stressed, focusing on his breathing, thinking of all the ways he â the indomitable Shaman who was the bane of so many lowlife foolsâ existences â could not act like a swooning Victorian maiden right now. âI have it well in hand,â he said, finishing on a stronger note. âBut I thought it best to inform you of the situation right away.â
âYeah,â Ghost said. âYouâve got Walsh and Foxâs sisters up there.â
That put a lump right back in Ianâs gut. âI know. Weâll move hotels, obviously. And weâllââ
âHold on,â Ghost said. âDonât do anything yet.â He soundedâ¦firm, yes, but paternal, also. An underlying warmth to his tone that made his words less of a command and more of a grounding reassurance.
Call Ghost, Alec had said, and Ianâs thoughts had already jumped there, because, as unlikely as it was, Ghost had become something of a father figure; comforting in his sternness and unwavering willingness to tackle any thorny situation.
âFirst,â Ghost continued, âI want the name of the security company Raven hired.â
The phone was on speaker, and Alec nodded and moved to go and ask.
âI want Ratchet and maybe Eden to do some digging and see what sort of operation they are. But yâall canât use them. Either they didnât show âcause theyâre shitheels, or theyâre the ones who trashed the room.â
Ian swallowed with difficulty. âThe thought did cross my mind.â
âHow many of your people do you have with you?â
âThree. But Iâm going to pull more from my New York office.â
âGood. When you get off the phone with me, call them. Iâm calling Mav.â
âWho?â
âMaverick â the New York chapter president. He can have Dogs there in three hours.â
âI hardly thinkââ
âNo,â Ghost said, almost gentle. âIâm telling him to send them. The meanest, canniest bastards heâs got. These Abacus assholes blew up their clubhouse a few months ago: theyâll want a chance for revenge.â
âOh. Right.â Heâd forgotten all about that, in his adrenaline rush.
âI need all of you to stay put at the hotel for now,â Ghost went on. âThey meant to spook you and drive you out. They wonât strike
